From Vernacular to World Heritage

Language: English.
Editors: L. Dipasquale, S. Mecca, M. Correia
Authors: 3DPAST researchers
244 pages

This publication brings together the results of the project 3DPAST. The research highlighted the exceptional character and quality of living in vernacular dwellings found in World Heritage sites. This was possible by seizing the cultural space of European vernacular heritage, located in Pico island (Portugal), Cuenca town (Spain), Pienza (Italy), Old Rauma (Finland), Transylvania (Romania), Berat & Gjirokastra (Albania), Pátmos (Greece), and Upper Svaneti (Georgia). New digital realities grant the possibility to visit and to appreciate those places, to non-travelling audiences, who lack the opportunity to experience this unique heritage in situ. Creative potential is highlighted in 3D models and digital visualisations, which associate outstanding local knowledge with the vernacular expression of World Heritage.

The core idea of the project is to create new perspectives to promote European vernacular heritage listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The work is based on three main dimensions of study: architectural vernacular heritage, historic constructive culture and intangible features. The wide range of actions carried out for the conservation of heritage involve fields such as training, intervention, research, dissemination, valorization, revitalization of local activities and tourism management. It is essential to coordinate these actions and focus on a single goal following strategies which have been analyzed and proved to be efficient. Detailed analysis of the eight case studies has revealed the strategies carried out by the different stakeholders in the protection and safeguarding of World Heritage Sites. Combined, these strategies have yielded positive results for heritage conservation in the short, mid and long term.
